Job Skills and Training for Valley Immigrants

Reported in the Comox Valley Echo, October 23, 2009:

Immigrants can now get help to upgrade their skills to get jobs, thanks to a provincial program new to the Comox Valley. The Skills Connect for Immigrants Program offers support for job training, certification, improving workplace English skills and more.

Immigrants who qualify for this program must have become a permanent resident of Canada within the last five years. They must be unemployed or working below their skill level and have at least an intermediate level of English language skills. Once accepted in the program, participant skills, qualifications and experience are assessed. Then support is given to gain job skills, training for certification and hands-on workplace experience.

Creative Employment Access Society, which operates The Job Shop, is working in partnership with ASPECT to deliver this program in the Comox Valley. The BC Skills Connect for Immigrants Program is part of the WelcomeBC umbrella of services, made possible through funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
