Visitor Information and Program Assistant, Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre

Wage: 14.50 per hours
Hours: 35 hrs per week for 8 weeks
Duties: Strathcona Wilderness Institute (SWI) is looking for two enthusiastic and energetic persons with an interest in working with the public in a park environment. They will assist with staffing at the Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre (managed by SWI) at Paradise Meadows in Strathcona Provincial Park . The primary responsibilities of the Visitor Services Information & Program Assistant will be to: a) Welcome diverse visitors to Paradise Meadows ranging from local to international, youth to senior, athletic to mobility challenged; b) Provide information about Park trails, plants and wildlife, and about safe and appropriate behaviour in the Park; c) Promote the SWI programmes (Nature walks, guided hikes, special events), sell books, brochures and maps, record visitor statistics, manage the loan of SWI resources including wheelchairs and hiking accessories; d) Assist with the delivery of interpretive programmes.
Requirements: • Secondary or Post-secondary level student with completed courses in relevant subjects (e.g. biology, environment, outdoor education, tourism) • Eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Programme (be between 15-30 years of age and be legally entitled to work in Canada) • Demonstrate the following characteristics: - ability to work independently and as part of a team - good communication and organizational skills - self motivated and self reliant - creative (skills in writing, photography, computer technology are an asset, as is a second language) Valid driver’s license (the student is expected to arrange their own transportation to the Centre – carpooling may be possible)
